Goji berries – with all the different things we hear today it’s becoming harder and harder to separate the truth from the lies. I mean in today’s modern society can you really believe anything you’re told? How many different types of berries have you been told about in the past few years? It’s become somewhat of a media hysteria to promote these berries and a corporate agenda to overprice them and hype them up. So what it really comes down to is knowing what’s going to do the trick for you. Which berries are actually worth the investment of your time and money and which are worthless?
The question stands, what are goji berries? Well, they’re a small berry found in sub-tropical climates which have been used for thousands of years by mostly Chinese doctors and heath enthusiasts. They are in fact used in some of the oldest herbal medication known to man. What are their positive effects? Some clinical trials have shown that goji berries can:
The fact of the matter is that yes, there are real health benefits to be seen by adding the goji berry to your diet.
Goji berries are not that easy to find in Australia, so is it worth tracking them down or searching for them online when you can easily get raspberries or blueberries or other high antioxidant foods from the local supermarket? The thing is, some foods have certain qualities that are unique to that food and there are many benefits of goji berries which we are not yet even aware of. Variety in our diet is extremely important for good health and longevity. It is great to eat a wide variety of berries, plus pomegranates, broccoli, apples, etc. and drink green tea and a little red wine. But goji berries are a fantastic addition to a diet which can really improve your health and help prevent serious diseases and in particular, age related diseases.
If you want to know if the goji berry is going to help you to look and feel better, we recommend you eat them every day for 2 to 4 weeks and see how you feel afterwards. If you can’t find them in your local supermarket, we recommend you take a goji supplement which can be ordered online and delivered to your home. You can order goji berry supplements here.
Want to grow your own goji berries? This is a great idea as fresh goji berries are tastier and more nutritious than dried goji berries or any of the goji supplements you can find.
Goji berry plants are now available in Australia. You can find them at many nurseries but if they don’t have them, they will usually order them in for you if you ask.
Goji berries can be grown in most parts of the county, including in Melbourne, as discussed by Dennis at Gardenworld:
The plant itself looks fairly ordinary with thin canes and long dull green leaves. It is actually a member of the Solanaceae family (tomatoes and chillies). The plant has several growth flushes during the season and in between tends to rest with no active growth.
It is at the ends of the new growth that clusters of flowers may form especially in late spring. The white to purple flowers (like a potato flower) open and then long thin green berries form (like Thai chillies). These mature in December to an orange colour and can be picked and eaten raw. The flavour is sweet and like a common cranberry. They are quite delicious in fact.
Have you tried growing goji berries? Were you successful? Did you get many fruits? We would love to hear your feedback on growing goji berries in Australia. Leave a comment if you have something to share.

Choice recently put to test the claims made by many marketers about the health benefits of so called super fruits. The fruits tested included:
They tested the fruit juices associated with these berries and this is what they had to say in general about these fruits:
So-called "superfruits" — goji, noni, mangosteen and açai — are rich sources of antioxidants, but some of the marketing hype exaggerates the benefits of their juices. There’s no good evidence that drinking them will cure diseases such as cancer or diabetes.
On a serve-by-serve basis, many common fruits such as strawberries and apples, contain more antioxidants, and are cheaper.
After their tests on the fruit juices, this was their verdict:
Superfruit juices contain a range of nutrients, but marketing spin has vastly exaggerated their health benefits. Until there’s much better scientific evidence, it’s cheaper and wiser to get antioxidants from other fruit (and veg) sources. A wide variety of types and colours of fruit and veg can help protect against diseases such as cancer, heart disease and type 2 diabetes — in part due to phytochemicals such as antioxidants, but also due to other nutrients they contain, including fibre.
So I guess that while, goji is high in antioxidants, important nutrients, and fibre, it should be included as part of a healthy, balanced diet which includes a wide variety of fruits and vegetables.
There are so many flavours of ice cream to choose from these days. There’s nothing wrong with going with the traditional vanilla, chocolate or strawberry but why not try something a little different?
At the Igloo Zoo in Bondi, you can sample a wide array of flavours which includes chocolate coated goji berry ice cream, as reported here:
Igloo Zoo has been quick to jump on the fro-yo bandwagon. The crisp, white shop offers frozen yoghurt that is 99.5 per cent fat-free, kosher and high in antioxidants. Far enough away from the crowds that flock to Bondi Beach, it’s a great spot to chill out and cool down. Choose from three flavours: original, green tea or pomegranate and a delectable selection of toppings. You can be as healthy as you please, with fresh mango, passionfruit, chocolate-coated goji berries or halva, a sweet sesame confection.

There are many reports in magazines, newspapers and on the internet which claim goji berry is a super food or super fruit. What does this mean and is it really true?
A super food is a term which is typically used to describe a fruit which is particularly high in antioxidants, vitamins, and other nutrients. Pomegranates, blueberries, raspberries, acai berry, and goji berries are all examples of super fruits. Whether or not they are actually more beneficial than other fruits and vegetables is debatable. Here is what FoodWatch has to say about the health benefits of goji, in particular.
There is a bit of inconsistency with this claim as Goji berry websites and advertising material claim to have 19 amino acids, while others claim to have 18 amino acids – it’s either one or the other.
Ok, so goji berries contain either 18 or 19 amino acids.
Germanium can be found in a variety of foods including beans, tomato juice, oysters, tuna and garlic. However, it is not considered an essential trace mineral and isn’t needed for good health.
Germanium has been claimed to have beneficial effects on a number of conditions include cancer, AIDS, liver disease, hypertension, arthritis and malaria. The results of trials using spirogermanium as a cancer treatment are inconclusive.
Germanium in goji berries may or may not be beneficial to your health.
The vitamin C content of Goji berries ranges anywhere from 29mg to 148mg per 100g, according to Wikipedia. Oranges contain 53mg of vitamin C per 100g which is more than your recommended daily intake for vitamin C.
So you if you want to increase you intake of vitamin C, you are probably better off increasing your intake of oranges as this is a more reliable and much cheaper source of vitamin C.
Yes, goji berry is good for your health but so are many other fruits and vegetables. Moderation and variety is key to a healthy diet.
