Want to grow your own goji berries? This is a great idea as fresh goji berries are tastier and more nutritious than dried goji berries or any of the goji supplements you can find.

Goji berry plants are now available in Australia. You can find them at many nurseries but if they don’t have them, they will usually order them in for you if you ask.

Goji berries can be grown in most parts of the county, including in Melbourne, as discussed by Dennis at Gardenworld:

The plant itself looks fairly ordinary with thin canes and long dull green leaves. It is actually a member of the Solanaceae family (tomatoes and chillies). The plant has several growth flushes during the season and in between tends to rest with no active growth.

It is at the ends of the new growth that clusters of flowers may form especially in late spring. The white to purple flowers (like a potato flower) open and then long thin green berries form (like Thai chillies). These mature in December to an orange colour and can be picked and eaten raw. The flavour is sweet and like a common cranberry. They are quite delicious in fact.

Have you tried growing goji berries? Were you successful? Did you get many fruits? We would love to hear your feedback on growing goji berries in Australia. Leave a comment if you have something to share.

Choice recently put to test the claims made by many marketers about the health benefits of so called super fruits. The fruits tested included:

goji berry

acai berry

noni

mangosteen

They tested the fruit juices associated with these berries and this is what they had to say in general about these fruits:

So-called "superfruits" — goji, noni, mangosteen and açai — are rich sources of antioxidants, but some of the marketing hype exaggerates the benefits of their juices. There’s no good evidence that drinking them will cure diseases such as cancer or diabetes.

On a serve-by-serve basis, many common fruits such as strawberries and apples, contain more antioxidants, and are cheaper.

After their tests on the fruit juices, this was their verdict:

Superfruit juices contain a range of nutrients, but marketing spin has vastly exaggerated their health benefits. Until there’s much better scientific evidence, it’s cheaper and wiser to get antioxidants from other fruit (and veg) sources. A wide variety of types and colours of fruit and veg can help protect against diseases such as cancer, heart disease and type 2 diabetes — in part due to phytochemicals such as antioxidants, but also due to other nutrients they contain, including fibre.

So I guess that while, goji is high in antioxidants, important nutrients, and fibre, it should be included as part of a healthy, balanced diet which includes a wide variety of fruits and vegetables.

At the Igloo Zoo in Bondi, you can sample a wide array of flavours which includes chocolate coated goji berry ice cream, as reported here:

Igloo Zoo has been quick to jump on the fro-yo bandwagon. The crisp, white shop offers frozen yoghurt that is 99.5 per cent fat-free, kosher and high in antioxidants. Far enough away from the crowds that flock to Bondi Beach, it’s a great spot to chill out and cool down. Choose from three flavours: original, green tea or pomegranate and a delectable selection of toppings. You can be as healthy as you please, with fresh mango, passionfruit, chocolate-coated goji berries or halva, a sweet sesame confection.

There are many reports in magazines, newspapers and on the internet which claim goji berry is a super food or super fruit. What does this mean and is it really true?

A super food is a term which is typically used to describe a fruit which is particularly high in antioxidants, vitamins, and other nutrients. Pomegranates, blueberries, raspberries, acai berry, and goji berries are all examples of super fruits. Whether or not they are actually more beneficial than other fruits and vegetables is debatable. Here is what FoodWatch has to say about the health benefits of goji, in particular.

There is a bit of inconsistency with this claim as Goji berry websites and advertising material claim to have 19 amino acids, while others claim to have 18 amino acids – it’s either one or the other.

Ok, so goji berries contain either 18 or 19 amino acids.

Germanium can be found in a variety of foods including beans, tomato juice, oysters, tuna and garlic. However, it is not considered an essential trace mineral and isn’t needed for good health.

Germanium has been claimed to have beneficial effects on a number of conditions include cancer, AIDS, liver disease, hypertension, arthritis and malaria. The results of trials using spirogermanium as a cancer treatment are inconclusive.

Germanium in goji berries may or may not be beneficial to your health.

The vitamin C content of Goji berries ranges anywhere from 29mg to 148mg per 100g, according to Wikipedia. Oranges contain 53mg of vitamin C per 100g which is more than your recommended daily intake for vitamin C.

So you if you want to increase you intake of vitamin C, you are probably better off increasing your intake of oranges as this is a more reliable and much cheaper source of vitamin C.

Yes, goji berry is good for your health but so are many other fruits and vegetables. Moderation and variety is key to a healthy diet.

There are many different reports and scientific studies about the health benefits of goji berries. A recent study conducted at the University of Sydney suggests that drinking goji juice may slow the development of skin cancer.

Of course at this stage, the experiments have only been conducted on mice, but it paves the way for further tests in humans. Here is what SMH had to say about the discovery:

A tiny red berry celebrated for its antioxidant qualities may also help protect against skin damage that leads to cancer, researchers believe.

Scientists at the University of Sydney fed diluted juice from the goji berry to mice in the laboratory and found it protected them against the same sun damage as other mice when exposed to harsh UV rays.

Another experiment showed skin cancer advanced slower in mice that had drunk goji juice

"The goji berry-drinking mice had significantly less inflammation of the skin," said Dr Reeve, who is a scientific adviser to a company that distributes the juice.

"And the juice seemed to protect the immune system because they didn’t get immuno-suppression which is a major risk factor for skin cancer development in chronically over-exposed skin."

It also appeared to have protective properties against skin cancer growth, she said, with another experiment showing skin cancer-induced mice had significantly slower growing tumours.

This doesn’t mean you can stop wearing sunscreen but adding goji juice to your diet could be beneficial to your skin.

How can goji berries help you to lose weight? The main way is the energy boost you get after consuming them. This helps you can burn calories and the extra energy you have means you can exercise more often and for longer which again results in more calories being burnt. Goji berries are also high in dietary fibre so eating them fills you up and keeps you feeling full for longer, so you are less likely to snack on unhealthy snacks.

That all sounds great but is it really true? Goji berries have been used in traditional Chinese medicines for centuries, including for weight loss. They continued to use these berries in their medicines for so long because they work. Scientific testing is still being undertaken but the results are promising and just as the Chinese have always thought, goji berries have many health benefits.

Lose Weight with Goji Berries

The only way to really know if you can lose weight with goji berries is to try it for yourself. Everyone is different and if you want to try goji weight loss supplements then they results you’ll see will vary too. Some people lose 5 kilos in a week, some might only lose 5 kilos in month. Obviously it will depend on many factors including how consistently you take your supplements, what you include in your diet, and how much exercise you do.

Which are the best goji berry supplements? Goji berry supplements are plentiful. You can find them in health food stores or you can buy them online. When you are looking for goji berry supplements make sure to look at what else is in the supplement. Some supplements have added ingredients which can help you to lose weight faster so check the ingredients carefully before you purchase.

One of the best things about goji berries for weight loss is that they are affordable. Some of the other products on the market for your health are extremely expensive. For example, acai berries are going up in demand all the time and price is constantly climbing. Even though goji berries are popular, they are still readily available and you can order them online any time you choose.

We recommend Goji Advance which can be delivered to Australia and they have a money back guarantee if you are not completely satisfied.

Goji berries are great for you for several reasons. First of all, they are great for your overall health. Goji berries are known for their free radical beating antioxidants as well as helping with weight loss and skin conditions. You would be amazed what a few servings of goji berries a week can do for your health. Goji berries are most often available in as dried goji berries but are also available as goji supplements.

Goji Berry Supplements

Goji berry supplements are available for a wide range of problems. You can get a supplement for weight loss, to improve your skin, or even your youthfulness. Goji supplements can help you with all of those problems and more. You can lose 5 kilos in 2 weeks when taking the right supplements and you can see an improvement in your overall health with a supplement which is high in antioxidants.

There are not many goji supplements available in Australia so we recommend buying them online from a reputable supplement company. You can order as many bottles as you choose and there are no recurring fees involved. You can also find dried goji berries in some health food shops but not everyone stocks them so you might have to try quite a few shops before you find what you’re looking for.

Save time and money by ordering your goji berry supplements online and have them delivered to your home within days.

Goji berries are one of the worlds newest miracle fruits. They can do a lot more than you might think. They can help you lose weight and make you look younger due to their high levels of vitamins, antioxidants, and fibre. They have been used in Chinese medicines for centuries and now you can experience their benefits too. Do goji berries really have the benefits described? Research is still ongoing but the high level of nutrient and antioxidants found in goji is undisputed. However, you do not have to take my word for it. There are hundreds of people who have experienced great results after taking goji berry. Best of all, their true life testimonials are available online for all to see. Read goji berry success stories here.

Organic Goji Berries

Now what about choosing organic goji berries? Why would you want to organic goji instead of regular berries? Well, goji berries that are grown with pesticides can be harmful to the body. Not only that, farm workers who are exposed to these pesticides are at a serious risk of getting cancer or life threatening respiratory diseases. Furthermore, the chemicals used on regular goji berries damage the environment, in particular the soil and local waterways. Buying organic goji berries means a safer environment for farm workers, less harmful pollution to the ecosystem, and less pesticides and toxins entering your body.

Goji berries – with all the different things we hear today it’s becoming harder and harder to separate the truth from the lies. I mean in today’s modern society can you really believe anything you’re told? How many different types of berries have you been told about in the past few years? It’s become somewhat of a media hysteria to promote these berries and a corporate agenda to overprice them and hype them up. So what it really comes down to is knowing what’s going to do the trick for you. Which berries are actually worth the investment of your time and money and which are worthless?

What Are Goji Berries?

The question stands, what are goji berries? Well, they’re a small berry found in sub-tropical climates which have been used for thousands of years by mostly Chinese doctors and heath enthusiasts. They are in fact used in some of the oldest herbal medication known to man. What are their positive effects? Some clinical trials have shown that goji berries can:

lower cholesterol – meaning you’re at lower risk of having a heart attack.

kill off cancer cells – no cancer means you can live a longer and healthier life.

help stabilize your blood glucose sugar level – avoid diabetes and the many hospital visits that go with it.

The fact of the matter is that yes, there are real health benefits to be seen by adding the goji berry to your diet.

Goji berries are not that easy to find in Australia, so is it worth tracking them down or searching for them online when you can easily get raspberries or blueberries or other high antioxidant foods from the local supermarket? The thing is, some foods have certain qualities that are unique to that food and there are many benefits of goji berries which we are not yet even aware of. Variety in our diet is extremely important for good health and longevity. It is great to eat a wide variety of berries, plus pomegranates, broccoli, apples, etc. and drink green tea and a little red wine. But goji berries are a fantastic addition to a diet which can really improve your health and help prevent serious diseases and in particular, age related diseases.

If you want to know if the goji berry is going to help you to look and feel better, we recommend you eat them every day for 2 to 4 weeks and see how you feel afterwards. If you can’t find them in your local supermarket, we recommend you take a goji supplement which can be ordered online and delivered to your home. You can order goji berry supplements here.
